Ichigo Kurosaki is a teenager gifted with the ability to see spirits. His life is drastically changed by the sudden appearance of a Soul Reaper—one who governs the flow of souls between the human world and the afterlife—named Rukia Kuchiki, who arrives in search of a Hollow, a dangerous lost soul that absorbs energy from souls. When Rukia is severely wounded defending Ichigo from the Hollow, she attempts to transfer a part of her reiatsu (霊圧?, literally, "spiritual pressure") energy to Ichigo so that he can defeat the Hollow. However, Ichigo takes almost all of her energy, transforming into a Soul Reaper and allowing him to defeat the Hollow with ease. As some time passes and Rukia has yet to return to the Soul Society, her Soul Reaper superiors learn about her whereabouts and actions and sentence her to death for performing the illegal act of transferring her powers. This however had ended with two high ranking Soul Reapers (Shimigami) injuring Ichigo and taking Rukia to their world The Soul Society. (Although he is unable to stop Rukia's departure to the Soul Society, Ichigo resolves to rescue her with the aid of several of his spiritually aware classmates, Orihime Inoue, Yasutora (Chad) Sado, and Uryu Ishida, and the ex-Soul Reapers Yoruichi Shihoin and Kisuke Urahara. Once in Soul Society, Ichigo and company battle against the elites of the Soul Reaper military and strive to reach Rukia before her execution.

It is revealed that Rukia's execution and Ichigo's rescue attempt both had been manipulated by a very high-ranking Soul Reaper, Sosuke Aizen, who was previously believed to have been murdered, as part of a far-reaching plot to take control of the Soul Society. Aizen betrays his fellow Soul Reapers and allies himself with the strongest of the Hollows, the Espadas, whom he enhances. Aizen thus becomes the main antagonist of the series, and the Soul Reapers form an alliance with Ichigo.

At this point, Bleach chronicles the war between the Soul Reapers, the Espadas, and Aizen. After Aizen defeats the Soul Reaper captains, Ichigo undergoes intense training with his father Isshin, who turns out to be a former Soul Reaper, in order to become strong enough to battle Aizen alone. As Aizen is weakened by his battle with Ichigo, a spell that Urahara had previously hidden within him activates and seals him, thus ending the conflict and leaving the Soul Society to imprison him. As a result of using an incredibly powerful attack in order to defeat Aizen, Ichigo loses all of his Spiritual Pressure and becomes an ordinary human.

Seventeen months later, Ichigo meets "Xcution", a group of humans possessing Fullbring powers based on Hollows and want Ichigo to absorb them. Ichigo starts training to regain his Soul Reaper powers by first developing his own Fullbring following the appearance of Shūkurō Tsukishima, the former leader of Xcution who is targeting his friends. After developing his Fullbring, Ichigo is betrayed by Xcution's current leader Kūgo Ginjō, a former Substitute Soul Reaper who had his memories rewritten to act as Tsukishima's enemy and help Ichigo gain powers to steal them. With help from Soul Society, Ichigo regains his Soul Reaper powers and starts fighting Ginjō's group alongside Soul Society's forces. The Soul Society forces end victorious with Ichigo defeating Ginjō and presumably killing Tsukishima.

Following these events, a group of Quincies called the "Vandenreich" declares war on the Soul Society. Ichigo once again ventures to Hueco Mundo, which has also been invaded by the Vandenreich; at the same time, the captains in the Soul Society battle a powerful group in the Vandenreich army known as the "Stern Ritter". During the invasion several Captains had their bankai stolen by the Stern Ritter. Meanwhile Captain Yamamoto took revenge on the Quincy who stole Sasakibe's bankai and then immediately sought out their leader who he identified as "Juha Bach" who up till now was referred to by the other Quincy as "His Majesty". Ueki dan lelaki misterius yang memiliki senjata kapur-kapur yang bisa meledak itu lalu bertarung memperebutkan Wool. Setelah pertarungan terakhir dua tahun lalu. Ueki dan teman-temannya kehilangan kekuatan mereka. Namun itu tak menghalangi semangatnya untuk membela kebenaran. Walau awalnya Ueki kerepotan karena diserang oleh kapur-kapur yang merebak, akan tetapi ia kemudian mempelajari kelemahan musuhnya dan akhirnya berhasil mengalahkan lelaki misterius itu yang langsung pingsan tak sadarkan diri.

Di saat kebingungan Ueki dan Ai terkejut karena ternyata Wool bisa berbicara layaknya manusia biasa. Untuk membalas budi, Wool lalumengankat Ueki sebagai tuannya. Wool kemudian menjelaskan bahwa untuk melepaskan cube-cube dari dalam tubuhnya, ia dan Ueki harus pergi ke sebuah tempat bernama megasite di dunia tempat Wool berasal yaitu hankagai atau dunia kemakmuran. Akan tetapi, Ueki yang sudah tak punya kekuatan mengubah ataupun senjata dewa, harus menghadapi banyak musuh dari penduduk dunia kemakmuran yang sebagian besar diantaranya memiliki kekuatan pekerjaan.

Setibanya di dunia kemakmuran, Wool mendadak tak bisa berbicara dan hanya bisa menggonggong saja sehingga tak bisa menjelaskan berbagai hal yang Ueki baru ditemui. Sedangkan tak lama kemudian Ueki dan Wool harus menyelamatkan seorang gadis kecil bernama Millie yang dikejar-kejar oleh penagih hutang bernama Ginzo. Akan tetapi karena Ueki tidak memiliki kekuatan istimewa apapun ia tak berdaya melawan kekuatan pekerjaan yang belum diketahuinya. Setelah menghindar dari serangan Ginzo, akhirnya Ueki, bersama Wool dan Millie berhasil melarikan diri.

Millie tinggal di binatu milik seorang cowok bernama Nagara. Di sana ia merawat Ueki yang tak sadarkan diri dan terluka akibat bertarung melawan Ginzo. Saat Ueki terbangun, ia lalu dikenalkan kepada Nagara. Ueki kemudian menanyatakan pada Nagara tentang kekuatan pekerjaan yang ingin dimilikinya, namun Nagara tidak begitu saja memberitahukannya dnegan mudah. Nagara lalu menantangnya sekaligus melihat kemampuan yang dimiliki Ueki. Setelah dilatih dengan keras dan mendapatkan simbol alat dari Nagara, Ueki akhinya mendapatkan kekuatan dan senjata yang diberikan padanya adalah sebuah alat pengepel lantai. Meski ia belum mengetahui fungsinya namun seiring dengan perjalanan petualangannya, Ueki akan mempelajarinya kekuatan barunya itu.

Nagara lalu meminta Ueki untuk membawa Haiji, kakak kandung Millie yang terlibat hutang kepada Ginzo. Saat Ueki berhasil menemukan Haiji dan mengajaknya kembali, ia malah mengajak Ueki untuk bertarung. Ternyata untuk melunasi hutang-hutangnya, Haiji bekerja pada seorang pimpinan penagih hutang yang bernama Shiro Teclin. Shiro yang saat itu muncul di hadapan Ueki dan Haiji, lalu mengancam akan membuat Haiji tak bisa menemui Millie lagi.

Mendengar hal itu kemarahan Haiji memuncak, ia dan Ueki lalu menyerang Shiro. Tapi Shiro bukan lawan yang mudah bagi mereka. Ia memiliki kekuatan yang bisa memanipulasi uang yang jika menempel pada seseorang maka bisa dikendalikan sesukanya. Ueki dan Haiji sempat kewalahan melawannya. Namun Ueki mempelajari kelemahan dari Shiro dan sebelum ia sempat mengalahkannya, tiba-tiba Ginzo menelepon Shiro dan mengatakan jika hutang Haiji dan Millie telah lunas.

Pada waktu bersamaan di lain tempat, Nagara meyakinkan Ginzo bahwa perbuatan mereka adalah salah karena membawa-bawa Millie yang masih kecil. Akhirnya urusan Haiji dan Millie pun selesai dan untuk membalas jasa, Haiji ingin bekerja pada Nagara. Pertemuan mereka bukanlah kebetulan, namun Nagara telah mengaturnya. Ia sengaja merekrut mereka untuk mengikuti pertemuan seleksi, yaitu ujian kualifikasi untuk mendapatkan hak pergi ke megasite yang terdapat di luar tembok kota tempat Nagara tinggal.

Nagara menjelaskan bahwa semua kota di dunia kemakmuran dibagi menjadi beberapa blok yang dibatasi oleh tembok-tembok tinggi. Hanya perusahaan yang diwakili oleh 4 orang anggotanya dan mendapatkan hak kualifikasi dalam pertemuan seleksi yang diadakan di setiap blok saja yang bisa pergi keluar. Selain Nagara, Ueki dan Haiji, perwakilan dari toko binatu milik Nagara pun bertambah satu orang lagi dengan kehadiran seorang cewek bernama Sora. Begitu mereka menghadiri acara pertemuan seleksi yang diikuti oleh banyak orang tiba-tiba Wool menghilang diculik oleh Rucha, cowok yang mengambil alih dan menjadi pimpinan baru penyelenggara pertemuan seleksi. Ia mendadak mengganti peraturan bagi para peserta pertemuan seleksi dengan memerintahkan para peserta untuk saling berebut menangkap Wool sambil melewati berbagai jebakan dan rintangan yang dipasangnya.

Tokoh utama Asakura Yoh dan teman baiknya Oyamada Manta

Suatu malam Manta bertemu dengan Yoh dan mengatakan bahwa mereka tidak cuma berdua malam itu. Ternyata Manta mulai bisa melihat kehadiran para roh orang mati disekitar mereka dan ini membuatnya histeris ketakutan. Sayangnya, ketika Manta menceritakan hal ini kepada teman-temannya, tak satupun dari mereka yang percaya. Manta merasa dipermainkan, terlebih oleh Yoh, si anak baru yang diberitahukan Manta berteman dengan Hantu. Yoh menyangkal pernah bertemu dengan Manta sebelumnya. Oleh karena itu di malam berikutnya Manta bermaksud membuktikan kebenaran ceritanya dengan kembali mendatangi kuburan di bukit tempat ia bertemu Yoh di malam sebelumnya.

Namun sial bagi Manta, ia ketahuan menyaksikan aksi brutal kelompok gangster pimpinan Bokuto no Ryu (Ryu, si pedang kayu) yang menghancurkan batu nisan samurai legendaris Amidamaru. Ryu adalah kepala gangster dengan dandanan super norak ala Elvis Presley. ^_^. Manta menjadi bulan-bulanan kelompok Ryu. Yoh yang mengetahui hal itu keesokan harinya menjadi tergugah hatinya dan baru ia mau mengakui kebenaran cerita Manta. Ini dilakukan karena hendak menyelidiki apakah Manta sungguh-sungguh melihat roh atau hanya bermaksud mempermainkan dirinya. Menurut Yoh hanya orang berhati baik dan bersih yang bisa sungguh-sungguh melihat keberadaan roh. Karenanya, Yoh bermaksud membalaskan perbuatan Ryu atas diri Manta.

Disaat itulah Manta melihat fenomena dunia yang betul-betul berbeda dengan dunia realita, karena ia menyaksikan sendiri bagaimana roh orang yang sudah mati betul-betul bisa dipanggil dan menyatu kedalam raga Yoh. Yoh mempergunakan roh Amidamaru, sang samurai karena kebetulan nisan Amidamaru-lah yang dirusak oleh Bokuto no Ryu. Kekuatan Yoh berubah 180 derajat. Bukan lagi kekuatan dari manusia biasa, apalagi dengan kenyataan kalau ia masih ABG. Sendirian ia sanggup mengalahkan Ryu dan kelompoknya. Dengan kesaksiannya itu, Manta kemudian menjadi kawan karib Yoh dan ia menjadi tertarik dengan dunia Shaman.

Keberadaan Asakura Yoh sebagai seorang shaman muda ternyata tidak sendiri, seiring alur cerita, aura pertarungan Amidamaru dalam raga Yoh ternyata mendatangkan para shaman lainnya dari berbagai belahan dunia. Satu-persatu mereka akan muncul, dimulai dengan kedatangan Tao Ren bersama roh pengawalnya Bason dan kakak perempuannya Tao Jun dengan roh pengawalnya Pai Long. Disini juga akan hadir karakter shaman lain bernama Horohoro, bahkan kedatangan tunangan Yoh yaitu seorang gadis bertipikal dingin bernama Anna Kyoyama.

Berkumpulnya para shaman di Tokyo bukan tanpa tujuan. Mereka berkumpul karena telah merasakan aura pertarungan dan siap bersaing dalan arena perbutan gelar Shaman King. Turnamen ini dimaksudkan untuk menemukan shaman terbaik yang akan berhak menerima The Savior, raja dari para roh pengawal sebagai roh pendampingnya. Konon, seseorang yang berhasil menjadi Shaman King akan jadi shaman paling tak tertandingi sedunia. Kedatangan Anna, tunangan Yoh, adalah untuk menggembleng tunangannya yang pemalas itu. Anna bermotivasi, ia harus menjadi istri seorang Shaman King kelak, karena itu caranya menggembleng fisik Yoh betul-betul diluar perlakuan seorang kekasih. Bahkan lebih mirip gemblengan ala prajurit militer. Yoh sendiri tidak punya alasan muluk untuk menjadi seorang Shaman King selain karena cuma untuk bisa hidup bermalas-malasan dengan adanya bantuan roh pengawal terhebat yang dimilikinya kelak. Betul-betul motivasi luhur seorang pemalas!

Namun siapapun dapat memprediksikan bakat luar biasa yang dimiliki Yoh sebagai shaman dan tak akan mengganggapnya remeh jika bertarung. Selain karena kemampuan teknik 'Hyoi Gattai' (kemampuan bersatu raga dengan roh pengawal) yang dimiliki anak ini semakin bertambah kuat dan kuat, ia juga memperlakukan Amidamaru tidak seperti para shaman lainnya. Kebanyakan shaman memperlakukan roh pengawalnya sebagai anak buah yang harus menurut setiap titah majikan.
